In collaboration with Burlington, Vermont and Burlington, Iowa, the City of Burlington, Ontario founded the Burlington International Games (B.I.G) with the purpose of promoting goodwill and understanding among participants. The games were held annually, alternating each summer between the three Burlington cities. Try outs were open to all Burlington residents 17 years of age and under. Sports included baseball, basketball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, skateboarding and more.
In the later years of the games, participants from other cities around the world were also invited to participate including Itabashi, Japan; Apeldoorn, Netherlands; Longueuil, Quebec; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The games celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2009. The competition ceased in 2010 due to limited participation in later years.
A selection of programmes, pamphlets and photographs have been digitized. More records are available at the Burlington Public Library.
