Burlington Public Library has undertaken past projects to index birth, marriages and death announcements published in the Burlington Gazette, The Journal, The Post, and the Burlington section of The Spectator, ranging from 1899 to 2015. Information found in this index is intended to help researchers quickly locate newspaper articles in our microfilm collection or online databases.

Due to the in-depth nature of the project, the library does not actively contribute to the index.

While every effort has been made to maintain accuracy, there may be errors. Contact the Local History and Digital Archive Coordinator if you discover a record that needs correcting or updating.

Searching the Index

Entries are sorted alphabetically by last name and then by year. To search entries, use the A-Z button bar or use the “Ctrl + F” keyboard shortcut:

  • On Windows, press and hold the Ctrl key while also pressing the F key.
  • On MAC, press and hold the Command key while also pressing the F key.

A search box will pop up in a corner of the screen that will allow you to search the page for names, dates and newspapers.

Some entries may contain more than one name. Only the first name recorded will be sorted alphabetically. To search all available names, use the “Ctrl + F” keyboard shortcut.

Search Tips

Not finding who you are looking for? Try these:

  • Check alternate spellings of names. For example, Green, Greene, Grean or Grene. Names may have been spelled incorrectly in newspapers or in the index transcription.
  • Check name variations, such as nicknames, full names, initials or maiden names.
  • Check different dates. Dates may have been transcribed incorrectly.
  • Switch the order of names. The index lists names as “Last Name, First Name” in most cases. However, the order could have been switched.
  • Search the names of parents or other family members. In some announcements, such as births, the parents or siblings may be named but not the newborn.

Note on “Date Unknown” Results

While the best attempt was made to correctly and thoroughly input information from newspapers into the index, some dates may still be marked as “Date Unknown.” This could be due to the date being unavailable in the newspaper or the entry being missed in the index. It may still be worthwhile checking the newspaper article to confirm information.
